Hello Parents and Guardians, Whew! June is flying by. It is hard to believe that the year is wrapping up so quickly. We have been really busy over the past few weeks. Here are some of the things we have been working on: Math In math we have been working on comparing numbers using the terms greater than, less than or equal to. We have also been using the signs <, > or =. While learning about the mathematical signs, we talked about thinking of them as an alligators mouth.  Therefore, the sign should open towards the bigger number because it wants more food! We also did a visual enactment of this concept, as a student in our class happened to be wearing a dinosaur shirt. If you look in the picture below he is getting ready to "eat" the larger number of students.    We have  been exploring representing numbers using base ten materials (tens and ones). Science/Literacy We discussed changes that occur on a seasonal basis and wrote about some...

Dear parents and guardians, I am back in full force, hopefully for good this time! Feeling much better and healing up! The students have been very resilient over the past 2 weeks, working diligently even on days where I was absent. Way to go grade ones! Just a reminder to please send back all home reading and library books if you have not done so already. We will not be doing any more book exchanges or sending home any new home reading books this year. The Raz-Kids accounts remain active so this may be a good tool to use to keep your kids reading at home :). This week we have continued to work hard on our writing during journals and letters to home. The expectations for editing continue to rise with students being expected to notice errors in capitalization, punctuation, and spelling of sight words. They should also be checking to see if they have used their blends and digraphs and if there are any spots where they should be adding some descriptive language. We have learned a T...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Unfortunately I am away for the time being due to an injury coupled with illness. I am hoping to be back within the next couple of days however I am not certain of my exact date of return. I am checking my email regularly still so if there is anything I need to know in the time being, please email me and I will pass it on to Mrs. Witczak. Here is the blog post from Friday.   Wow! Mrs. Witczak and I are extremely impressed and proud of our students! They were amazing at our assembly today😀😍   Below are some of the learning activities we completed this week. During literacy centres, we started a new and exciting research project! The students are using PebbleGo to learn about Painted Lady Butterflies. Through their research, they are learning to categorize information and create "jot notes." Ask your child to tell you why we picked Painted Lady Butterflies to study.  We also learned about the sound that "ai" and "ay...

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear parents and guardians, Another busy week of learning! On Monday we wrote in our journals. We continue to focus on spelling sight words correctly, adding details to our sentences, using punctuation, capitals and lowercase letter correctly, and using juicy descriptive words. The students are also expected to edit their work for the above things before showing a teacher. We continued to discuss the book "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" and even created our own stories! The students were challenged to be creative with their stories and use animals, items and events that were not used in the original story. Ask your child what their story was about! We have continued to work on our sight words. It is so exciting to see the students learning so many words and moving onto the second hundred list of words! Please continue to ask comprehension questions when doing home reading with your child to ensure their understanding of the story. Have the children tell you in their ...

Dear parents and guardians, This week has been very busy and full of great learning opportunities. On Monday, we wrote in our journals. The students are now expected to be writing at least 8-10 sentences in the allotted time and to be editing their work for sight words, spelling errors, punctuation, and whether or not their sentences make sense. We are also working on adding more descriptive language instead of just listing things. For example, a student might write 3 or 4 sentences about their trip to the park before talking about what they had for dinner. We have been doing some work with the story "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie" this week. First, we read the story and our wall story. Then, we did a sequencing activity where we put all of the events in order. We also discussed cause and effect. Ask your child what a cause and an effect is as well as give you an example. We spent two full mornings on this so they should know it off by heart!! We covered two ...

Hello Everyone!   We have had a very fun week of swimming! It has been fabulous watching the students become more confident in the water. Thank you for your support in sending the students to school in their bathing suits - it made the transition to the pool very smooth. It was great to see you all at Student-Led Conferences; your children have been working so hard this year and the progress they have made is amazing! They should be very proud of their work. We had a magic show this week! The main focus of the magic show was friendship.  F - Feelings. We consider peoples feelings when making decisions. R - Real. We behave authentically with our peers. I - Invite. We need to invite people into our lives to make friends. E - Encourage. We help our friends be the best they can be. N - Name. We need to learn as many names as possible. D - Dependable. We are there for our friends in good times and bad. S - Smile. True friends learn to smile often. ...
