Dear parents and guardians,

Another busy week of learning!

On Monday we wrote in our journals. We continue to focus on spelling sight words correctly, adding details to our sentences, using punctuation, capitals and lowercase letter correctly, and using juicy descriptive words. The students are also expected to edit their work for the above things before showing a teacher.

We continued to discuss the book "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" and even created our own stories! The students were challenged to be creative with their stories and use animals, items and events that were not used in the original story. Ask your child what their story was about!

We have continued to work on our sight words. It is so exciting to see the students learning so many words and moving onto the second hundred list of words!

Please continue to ask comprehension questions when doing home reading with your child to ensure their understanding of the story. Have the children tell you in their own words what happened in the story, how the characters might feel, and if they have ever had an experience similar to that of the character. These questions help the children to look deeper into the story and actually understand what is happening, instead of just reading the words.

In Science, we continued to discuss plants. We talked about their needs, their parts, and their life cycle. The students seem to have a solid understanding of these concepts. It was perfect timing for the tree seedling to go home! Have fun planting!

In math, we have continued to discuss shapes. We have learned about squares, rectangles, triangles, circles and hexagons. We also hunted for these shapes around the classroom and recorded what we found. Ask your child about the different shapes around the classroom and what they were able to find.

Reminders:

- Music Monday is on May 7th. We have some special visitors coming to our school that will teach us some traditional Indigenous songs. They are even bringing their big Powwow drum! We expect the assembly to be starting around 1pm. Parents are welcome to join! It is sure to be an amazing experience.

- Please continue to return Letters to Home books each week. We had many more returned this week than last week and the students were happy to not have to write on loose leaf paper. Thank you for you cooperation with this!

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend, and maybe even our first thunderstorm of the year!

-Ms. Moore

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning: We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less) . Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing. One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples: We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above. We have...
