Dear parents and guardians,

Today we had our very first lockdown practice of the year. We explained the meaning of a lockdown to the students yesterday, as well as reviewed procedures. The majority of students did a wonderful job and stayed silent through to the end of the lockdown. Ask your child how they did, and chat with them about the severity of talking during a lockdown.

The learning happens so fast it is hard to keep up! We have been continuing to practice our first 26 sight words. The most recent ones that we added are:

- at
- be
- this
- have
- from
- or

Please continue to practice these words with your child. We have also added a new fall-themed poem this week for the children to practice, called "The Bat". It is one of the most challenging ones they have learned yet, and they are working hard to master it!

We have been very focused on our writing this week. We have been trying extremely hard to add new words to our vocabularies by describing objects in our writing. For example, today we wrote about pumpkins. Ask your child how they would describe the following pumpkins:

Here are some examples of our pumpkin writing:

Over the past week, we have been working on writing and illustrating our own "Hello Fall, Goodbye Summer" books which should have come home in your child's purple folder.  This was another opportunity for the students to work on descriptive vocabulary. The students were given plenty of time to finish their books. If your child's book is incomplete, you may want to ask them about it.

In social studies, we have been presenting our "All About Me" bags a few students at a time. It has been a great opportunity for students to share some information about themselves, and to ask questions about their fellow students!

In math, we have been continuing our work on patterning. Please continue to work with you child on translating (i.e. ABAB or 1212), creating, copying and extending various patterns. We finished our last round of sorting and patterning centers today.

Reminders:

- There is an assembly tomorrow at 10:45. All parents are welcome to attend.

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning: We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less) . Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing. One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples: We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above. We have...
