Tuesday October 3rd

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe that it is October already! We have accomplished so much over the past month and continue to learn new things together every day!

On Friday, you may have noticed your child's Poetry Book come home in their backpack! We start out each morning by reciting the poems contained in the poetry books, and when we are ready we start a new poem! We will be sending these books home each Friday for you to review them with your child at your convenience. Please make sure that these books are returned on the following school day, so that we can add more poems to them!

We also began our home reading program last week, which is being sent home in a purple folder. Please make sure that, as you read the books, you fill out the accompanying "Home Reading Log", which I will review to ensure that the books being sent home are at the right level for your child. Please have your child read it to you three times before it is exchanged for a new one.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have created our own class version of the story "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. We have also begun to write and illustrate individual versions of the story, which you should expect to see in their backpacks soon!

Yesterday, we wrote in our journals about our weekend. It has been great to see the students properly spelling some of the sight words we have been practicing in class in their notebooks! The sight words we have been working on are:

  • the
  • of
  • and
  • a
  • to
  • in
  • is
  • you
  • that
  • it

We then read the book, "If You're Thankful and You Know It" by Chrissy Bozik. As a class, we discussed the fact that some people may be celebrating Thanksgiving this coming weekend. We then brainstormed things/people/places we are thankful for and wrote about them in our writing books.

The students then used their fine motor skills to create a turkey. Each child was required to trace hearts, cut them out and glue them down. They were then challenged to color in the feathers of the turkey in a pattern. Have your child name the patterns (with colors and letters) that they see in the turkeys below.

We also discussed how authors sometimes complete a "rough draft" of their work and then a "good copy" to be published or shared with others. The students learned that a "good copy" is to be completed in their very best printing and that it also needs to be neat and tidy.

Reminders:
  • There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, October 9 or Monday, October 16
Message from the office:

School Pick Up/Drop Off
Dear Parents,
We want to thank you for your great communication regarding attendance, appointments and emergencies.  This really makes a difference in our safety of our students as we know where they are, and, our office efficiencies throughout the day.
As the weather has become cooler we have observed that more families are calling into the office to make alternate arrangements at mid, or end of the day.  This is very disruptive for learning and, on some occasions, has become a safety concern resulting in the enactment of our Missing Child Protocol.
Absences and Emergencies
Always call the 24 hr. attendance line if your child will be late, or away 403-817-3504
            - Leave your name, child’s name, teacher’s name and reason for absence or late
PRO Tips:
1.    Make plans such as play-dates the day before so the child is aware of the expectations.
2.    For appointments, pick up the child before the lunch hour begins, or after the lunch hour ends to save time (finding students during recess can be a slow process).
3.    Arrive on time to pick up your child.  Children tend to worry if the parents are missing ;)
End of Day Pick-up
1.    Changes in routines are to be provided in writing (not email) to the teacher first thing in the morning unless it is an emergency
2.    Do not call, or email the school during the day to change plans (including play-dates, other family friends picking up the child etc.)
3.    Without written communication, regular routines such as taking the bus, walking home etc. will be followed and/or the child will be kept in the office until one of the emergency contacts is communicated with
4.    Students are not allowed to use the school phone to arrange play-dates
Thank you for your support,
Ken Taylor Staff

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning: We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less) . Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing. One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples: We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above. We have...
