Dear parents and guardians,

This week we have continued practicing our sight words and our poems. The students are loving reciting the poems every day. We have also continued working through our literacy centers, where the students are practicing their alphabet, rhyming, and word manipulation skills. Over the last two days we have been learning about instructional writing. The students were asked to explain how to brush their teeth as a class, and were required to be very specific to avoid misunderstanding. This was their first copy completed yesterday:

Today, we read our instructions again and noticed that we used the word "put" five times! We then focused on "transitional words" to make our writing more interesting. Ask your child what transitional words they could insert into their writing.

Here is our revised copy that we created as a class:

Here is a full list of transitional words we came up with as a class:

The students then began writing their own instructions for brushing their teeth. They were required to include a title, a list of materials, and a list of steps.

In science, we have been learning about our eyes. Last week, we learned about the purpose of the iris and the pupil. This week, we discussed the functions of rods and cones, what it means to be blind, and what it means to be colourblind.

Here are some questions you can ask your child:

- What do rods help us see?
- What do cones help us see?
-What does it mean to be colourblind?
- Can a person who is colourblind see any colours at all?
- What does it mean to be blind?
- What are some ways that people who are blind can get around?
- What is braille?

As a class, we have been learning how to count backwards and forwards, as well as how to skip count. Please practice counting in the following ways at home:

- By 1's to 100
- By 2's to 20
- By 5's and 10's to 100

We are beginning to represent addition word problems in different ways. Here is an example.

Today we read a book called "Size of the Problem". We discussed small, medium, and large problems and then decided how we could deal with them appropriately. Have your child describe a small, medium, and large problem and an appropriate solution to that problem.

Message from the Office:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Last week, The Fundraising Association sent home our latest fundraiser.
Until November 23rd we will be selling beautiful poinsettias, Christmas wreaths and arrangements. Last year this fundraiser was a great success!  For each item sold the school receives $7-9.  These funds will be used for such things as the playground, technology for the school, books, school presentations and other school items for the classrooms.

Please see the attached colour order forms.

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning: We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less) . Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing. One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples: We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above. We have...
