Dear parents and guardians,
It is hard to believe that it is November already! We have had a very busy and exciting week. We started the week by writing in our journals about our weekends. This week, our focus in our writing has been to use descriptive, or "juicy" language, to enhance our writing and make it more interesting. Some children are writing almost two whole pages in their journals now! Have your child describe something to you using their descriptive language!
We finished our pumpkin writing where we continued our focus on descriptive writing, and did some pumpkin art to go along with it. Mrs. Witczak led one art project and I led another, so ask your child which one they participated in!
We also added some new sight words this week. The words that we have learned so far are:
- the
- of
- and
- a
- to
- in
- is
- you
- that
- it
- he
- was
- for
- on
- are
- as
- with
- his
- they
- I
- at
- be
- this
- have
- from
- or

In math, we have been learning to represent numbers in different ways. Students have been showing each number using digits, written words, tally marks, tens frames, dice, and number sentences (i.e. 2 + 2 = 4). We have also been discussing things that we see in the world that represent each number, such as a car having four wheels. When we were showing the number four, we discussed doubles and how various numbers can be used in a "doubles" number sentence. We learned about the number five yesterday.
Yesterday, we had Richard Young, a magician, come into our classroom for a magic show focusing on colours! He showed us many fascinating tricks and had us all saying "how did he do that?!" He taught us many different things about light and colour. Ask your child the following:
- What happened when the magician shone the light through a prism?
- What do the words transparent, translucent, and opaque mean?
- What happens when you mix blue and red together? blue and yellow? red and yellow?
We had a very fun time with our Halloween celebrations yesterday. The students had the opportunity to bring in their very own carved pumpkins to put on display for the parade. Students who brought costumes were asked to change into them at lunch, and got to spend the rest of the day dressed up! In the afternoon, we enjoyed some Halloween-themed centres, as well as a Smartboard literacy activity to end the day! Please ensure that children are only bringing one Halloween treat per day to ensure that our learning continues throughout the entire day!

As you may already know, in less than 3 weeks we are hosting our second annual Christmas Market and Family Festival to benefit your School Council and Playground Fund. 2. Similar to last year, we are holding a raffle the day of the market. So far we have a few wonderful prizes compliments of local businesses, however, we are still looking for a larger item such as hockey tickets. Last year's market was a great success and we know this year will be even better!
