Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week has been very exciting so far! On Monday, we worked on our journals. Our main areas of focus in writing right now are as follows:

- proper use of capital letters
- proper use of end punctuation
- proper use of the digraphs "th", "sh", and "ch"
- properly spelled sight words
- and as always, finger spaces!

For the last two weeks, we have sent home a green journal titled "Letters to Home". The idea is that your child can share with you what they have done during the week, while the book provides you with information regarding the progression of their writing. We ask that you please respond to your child in the journal and send it back each Monday.

Today, we had an in-school field trip! A mechanical engineer came in to teach us about building materials and structures. What a great way to kick off our "Building Things" unit! We made and tested Lego bridges (we EXCEEDED expectations, with the strongest bridge holding 12 weights!) as well as paper bridges. It was hard to believe that a few pieces of paper could hold much weight, but our strongest paper bridge held 6 weights before falling! Here are some pictures and videos from our day:).

We have also continued working on our MISSING posters for our lost gingerbread people. We wrote a rough copy, edited it, and then copied it over to the poster. Ask your child where they think the gingerbread people went!

The book fair is tomorrow. Students wrote down books that they are interested in today, and are able to purchase them tomorrow or at conferences.

I look forward to seeing you all at Student Led Conferences on Thursday and Friday :).

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning: We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less) . Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing. One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples: We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above. We have...
