Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning:

We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less). Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing.

One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples:

We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above.

We have also been doing a morning message to aid students in editing their work independently. Usually, I select student to tell me something that they did or that they are excited about and then we edit it on the board. An example might look like this:

thIs WEEkend ms. moore WETN to. banFf to si teh ICE SculPTures?

Have your child edit the above sentence for proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling of sight words :).

We sent home green writing books for students to keep at home since they were getting very ratty looking. Please keep the writing book at home, but if it says "Letters to Home" please ensure it is sent back to school each Monday.

We had a special guest, our school nurse, come in to our class to teach us about our senses and proper oral hygiene. Ask your child to tell you about the experiment with the egg and Coca-Cola!

We also have been discussing our sense of touch and our skin. Ask your child how their skin helps them and what they can do to protect it in all different types of weather :).

We started new math centres today. Ask your child which one they enjoyed the most. We are focused on the following skills:

- 1 more/1 less, 2 more/2 less.
- counting by 2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 100, 1s to 100, and backwards from 20 to 1 by 1's.
- naming random numbers out of sequence (mystery number).
- counting on from the bigger number when solving an addition question
- using number lines to solve addition questions.
- doubles facts

Reminders:

- forms for an in-class field trip went home yesterday. Please sign and return the forms as soon as possible.
- please return any "letters to home" green books and poetry books you have at home.
- feel free to keep home reading books for a couple of nights if you need. Please practice fluency and expression on the 2nd and 3rd time reading the book. Purple folders need to be sent back to school even if you keep the book at home.

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...
