Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we have continued to work on our first 100 sight words, as well as some words from the 200 list. At this point in time, students should be able to recite about 60 of the first 100 sight words, without hesitation (within 2 seconds). We will continue to practice these words in class.

We have continued to recite our poems frequently as well as read our wall story together. We have been practicing reading more quickly and fluently when we read as a class. Today we added two new poems!

The students have been working hard to complete their gingerbread stories. Most students have completed a good chunk of their final copies and are beginning to finish up. Mrs. Witczak started an illustration centre today for students who have completed their gingerbread stories. Ask your child where they are in the process, as we are working hard to use our class time wisely.

We had a discussion and an in-depth lesson today on drawing and outlining. We are working to have the students take their time on their drawings, and use different mediums to achieve different effects. For example, we learned that markers are for outlining and making things stand out, and the rest of the colouring should be done in pencil crayon or crayon. Ask your child what they need to do to create a 4 star illustration.

In science, we have continued to explore new vocabulary that relates to buildings. Ask your child what the words "ancient", "foundation" and "beam" mean. We also discussed the value of walls today. Ask your child what walls are good for aside from just holding up the ceiling.

Students in our class used the straws and connectors to build a house for our gingerbread people this week. Here are some examples of what students came up with.

We made another trip to the Maker Space this week where students had the opportunity to test out new challenges. Here are some things they came up with!

In math, we are practicing answering simple addition questions using number lines, pictures, tally marks, dice, among other strategies. Students are expected to show at least one way that they came to their answer.

Reminders:

-In-line skating is coming up next week. Please note that the permission form needs to be signed and returned by Tuesday, March 6th. If the form is not signed and returned, your child will not be able to participate. Helmets are recommended, but not mandatory.

Dear parents and guardians, Sorry for the long delay in putting up a new post. This time of year is very busy! As always, our students have had many awesome learning experiences in the last couple of weeks. In language arts, we... - worked on our journals (students should be able to ... write 8-10 sentences, edit for proper use of periods and capitals, spell their sight words correctly, add description instead of just listing events, and use juicy descriptive words). - continued our literacy centres (read with me, buddy read, phonics books, reading comprehension pages, iPads and writing). The students are always excited for literacy centres and are showing a love of reading already. A love for reading is SO important! - wrote our letters to home. At this point in time, you should be seeing your child attempt all of the things that are listed under expectations for journal writing. - finished our second class chapter book called "Tigers at Twilight". Ask your child abo...

Dear Parents/Guardians, Inline Skating : Our class will be skating on  March 20, 21 and 22 . If you wish, you may send your child's helmet to school on Monday, March 19 and it can stay in our classroom for the week. At this point in time, we do not require parent volunteers as the Leadership Club from Kenneth D. Taylor will be supporting students with getting their gear on.     Request: We are going to be starting our science unit on Building Things in the next few weeks. It is a really fun unit, but it requires lots of materials. Therefore, we are requesting your help!   If you have any of the following items that are empty and clean, please send them with your child to school.   ·        Kleenex boxes ·        Cereal boxes ·        Yogurt cups ·        Shoe boxes ·        Toilet p...

Dear Parents and Guardians, Here is an update from the CBE regarding the winter weather warning: We have had a jam packed week of learning so far! We are continuing to work on our sight words. Seeing as we are about half way through the year, students should be able to recite at least 50 of the first 100 words quickly (2 seconds or less) . Students are making great progress in this area and it is really helping them with their reading and writing. One Monday, we worked on our journals. Here are some examples: We began story writing this week in regards to our missing gingerbread people (that have all been found!).  As a class, we worked on an introduction. Like good writers to, we then went back and edited our work for proper punctuation as well as re-worded things that did not make sense. Our class is really focusing on independently making edits to their work by circling the word that they want to edit and writing the edit above. We have...
